Technological advances in hearing aids
Oticon was founded by Hans Demant in 1904. His wife suffered from hearing loss which was of great concern to him. He began importing hearing aids to Denmark for her and was sincerely determined to help her and others suffering from hearing impairment. When he passed away in 1910, William his son took over Oticon. William secured exclusive distribution for Acousticon hearing aids sometime in the 1920s and in 1946, “Oticon TA” became the first Danish hearing aid produced by the company.
Technological advances during the past couple of decades have enabled Hans’ company to introduce several new innovative products. MultiFocus, introduced in 1991, became the world’s very first fully automated hearing aid. Later, DigiFocus was introduced in 1997 as the world’s first digital hearing instrument. This won a European design prize. The next landmark was the introduction of Adapto in 2001, which included the VoiceFinder system, also an Oticon invention. Syncro which incorporated Artificial Intelligence into a hearing aid and won the European Information Society Technology 1st Grand Prize was introduced in 2004. Several other additional oticon hearing aids products have also been introduced by Oticon in the last couple of years, and it has become a leading company in hearing aid innovation.
The only worthy competitor to the Oticon hearing aids is phonak hearing aids, a slightly newer company, with some truly marvelous inventions to their credit. The ones that deserve most mention is their work on pediatric solutions, and hearing aids designed specially for children Also their in the canal, and water resistant models have been hugely popular in the market, especially with those individuals who suffer from a severe hearing loss. The wireless Bluetooth connected hearing aids from Photon also took the market by storm. Their wireless solution, and small designs, make no allowances for bad sound quality, and have become the hallmark, of good sound with other USPs.
